Desert Monks Brewing Co. Earns Silver Medal at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival®

Alewife’s Pumpkin Pie recognized at world’s largest professional beer competition

Gilbert, AZ• Sept 21, 2021 — Desert Monks Brewing Co. was awarded a silver medal at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition, presented by the Brewers Association®. The best beers in 97 beer categories covering 175 different beer styles (including all subcategories) were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals at a ceremony at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Friday evening during the Craft Brewers Conference® and livestreamed on The Brewing Network.

Desert Monks Brewing Co. was recognized in the Pumpkin beer-style category for its Alewife’s Pumpkin Pie, a Marzen-styled Ale that is amber in color and full of pumpkin pie flavor. Alewife’s Pumpkin Pie is based on our DMBCO Klosterkind Marzen grain-bill and draws from years of making pumpkin pies from scratch. Desert Monks Brewing Co. (DMBCo) is a 25-barrel nano-brewery and taproom located in Gilbert, AZ that prides itself on serving a wide variety of excellent brews. DMBCo provides something everyone will love, from the seasoned beer enthusiast to the “I only drink wine” believer.

Two of the five DMBCo Owners, Arturo Ruiz & Daniel Rosales-Yoemans, accept the Silver Award for Alewife’s Pumpkin Pie at the 2021 GABF

“This brew is one of our seasonal best sellers and one of my favorite beers. The recipe was born from a “happy little accident” and years of family holiday traditions that we combined and leveraged to create something wonderful. Some of the best things in life are that way, too. We are thrilled to receive this National Recognition and look forward to sharing our lineup of beers with new and returning patrons” said Sommer Decker, Owning Partner and Brewer at Desert Monks Brewing Co.

Judging took place in 34 sessions over 17 days with strict health and safety measures in place. 170 judges evaluated 9,680 entries from 2,192 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

“Despite being forced to cancel the festival portion of GABF, our brewing community rallied together to make this year’s GABF competition one for the books — our largest competition judged to date,” said Chris Swersey, competition director, Great American Beer Festival. “Judges continue to be impressed with the quality and innovation of all entries they evaluated. The Brewers Association is proud to honor this year’s deserving winners.”
